Fast Facts
Tulsa’s Ozone Alert Program
The award-winning Ozone Alert! Program brings citizens, business, industry and government in the Tulsa Metropolitan area together to voluntarily reduce ozone-forming emissions on days vulnerable to high ozone levels. The first of its kind, our Ozone Alert! Program has been widely replicated throughout other areas. Cities such as Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Francisco, Cincinnati, and many others, large and small, have adopted the voluntary Ozone Alert! concept. And it works!
What is an Ozone Alert Day?
An Ozone Alert! Day is a day forecasted to have higher than healthy levels of ozone. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, working with the National Weather Forecast, predicts days when atmospheric conditions may cause unhealthy levels of ozone in Tulsa. This advance prediction and the notification system allow the public and business community to take voluntary measures to reduce ozone formation, keeping the air as clean as possible.
Why Taking Public Transportation Matters
Significant Emission Reductions: Public transportation produces 55% less carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per passenger mile compared to private vehicles. This substantial reduction plays a vital role in combating climate change.
Annual CO₂ Savings: Communities investing in public transit collectively reduce the nation’s carbon emissions by approximately 63 million metric tons each year. apta.com
Gasoline Conservation: By decreasing the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road, public transportation saves about 6 billion gallons of gasoline annually, contributing to energy conservation and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.
Enhanced Air Quality: Utilizing public transit leads to lower emissions of pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, resulting in improved air quality and public health benefits.

Cost Savings
Annual Savings: By opting for public transportation over personal vehicle use, individuals can save an average of $13,218 per year, which equates to approximately $1,102 per month. These savings stem from reduced expenses on fuel, maintenance, insurance, parking, and vehicle depreciation.
Stability in Transit Fares: While the costs associated with purchasing and maintaining personal vehicles have risen—new car prices increased by 30% and used cars by 40% since 2019—public transit fares have remained relatively stable since 2020.
Gasoline Price Surge: In 2023, gasoline prices experienced a 25% increase due to factors like restricted oil supply and heightened demand. This surge further amplifies the cost-effectiveness of public transit.
